New international domain names. We have mentioned before the introduction of a vast range of new international domain names or gTLDs as they are called. Now these new gTLDs are starting to launch. There’s a great animated infographic explaining the rollout here. So look out for the likes of .app, .fishing, .talk, .blog, .game and, for the uber geeks out there, .foo, all likely to go live in in January 2014. They will be followed by another 600+ over the next two years, including .kiwi, the application for which is still under examination.

And on the local front, InternetNZ has approved in principle the opening up of the New Zealand domain name space, so that we will no longer need to register in the second level domains .co. .org etc. So, for example, we will be able to have the name lowndesjordan.nz. It’s a two edged sword of course since businesses who may be quite happy with their current .co.nz name will undoubtedly want to obtain a .nz name in addition or risk someone else obtaining it. We expect that this change will not actually occur until late 2014 or early 2015.
